How to fix "Patch Scan Failed"?

I have fully licensed VM and Patch Management modules and all the correct configuration but many of my assets report "Failed" with the reason "Patch Scan Failed". There's no other indication what went wrong or how to fix it. The Cloud Agents on each device are running and configured properly as far as I can tell. Does anyone know what's actually wrong and how to fix it, please?
