I decided to give Qualys Freescan a try to do a penetration test. I'm going to scan a machine in the cloud, but my cloud provider is asking for the IP of the scanning machine. Would you be able to help me to obtain that?
Thanks for trying it out. When you scan a public IP address using the Qualys FreeScan freemium service, you do not need to deploy or manage a specific scanning "machine." The machine doing the scanning will be automatically assigned from a large pool of public Internet scanners within Qualys' infrastructure.
The source IP address of the scanner could be anywhere within the 18.104.22.168/20 address block. This is the most specific network detail you will be able to provide to your cloud provider.
Note that the more advanced and customizable QualysGuard suite provides options for scanning public IP addresses from a scanner deployed with a defined IP address. Additionally, you can readily deploy a QualysGuard Virtual Scanner Appliance directly onto Amazon EC2 and most VMware-powered providers for internal scanning on an IaaS cloud. Free trials of the QualysGuard suite are also available to qualified customers and partners.
